General

• What is a bow?
  From plank end to end, any distortion from flat.


• What is a burl?
  A swirl or twist of the grain of the wood that usually occurs near a knot, but does not contain a knot.


• What is crook or camber (sidebow)?
  The length of a plank is not true or square against a straight edge.


• What does it mean to cure?
  To change the properties of a substance by chemical reaction and thereby developing maximum strength.  Generally accomplished by the action of heat or a catalyst, with or without pressure.


• What is a knot?
  Cross-section of a tree branch or limb.  Sound, tight knots less than 1/2" in diameter are typical for hardwood flooring.  Pin knots are typically 1/4" or less in diameter.


• What is a reducer strip?
  A transition molding accessory for hardwood flooring, normally used at doorways, but sometimes at fireplaces and as a room divider.  One edge is at the same height as the flooring and the other is tapered or feathered.  3' or 6' fixed length or random length is available.


• What is an annual growth ring?
  The layer of wood growth formed on a tree during a single growing season.


• What is compression set?
  Caused when wood plank absorb excess moisture and expand so much that the cells along the edges of adjoining pieces in the floor are crushed. This causes them to loose resiliency and creates cracks when the floor returns to its normal moisture content.


• What is crowning?
  A “convex” or “crowned” condition or appearance of individual plank, with the center of the plank higher than the edges. (Plank is frowning across the width)


• What is cupping?
  A “concave” or “dished” appearance of individual plank, with the edges raised above the center. (Plank is smiling across the width)


• What is decay?
  The decomposition of wood substance by fungi. The incipient stage is characterized by discoloration, and may be accompanied by a softening of the wood substance.  The final or ultimate state is characterized by the partial or complete collapse of the wood structure and the destruction of the wood substance.


• What is delamination?
  The separation of any of the veneer plys that make up the flooring.


• What is dimensional stability?
  The degree to which the flooring maintains its original dimensions when subjected to humidity changes.


• What is micro-beveled or eased edge?
  All edges of the flooring plank are slightly beveled at 45 degree angles to the plank surface, resulting in a very shallow groove between pieces when they are placed next to each other.  Micro-beveled edges are smaller than eased edges and eased edges are smaller than beveled edges.


• What is end-matched?
  In tongue-and-groove plank flooring, the individual pieces have a tongue milled on one end and a groove milled on the opposite end, so that when the individual planks are butted together, the tongue of one piece engages the groove of the next piece.


• What is fiberboard?
  A broad generic term inclusive of sheet materials of widely varying densities manufactured of refined or partially refined wood or other vegetable fibers. Bonding agents and other materials may be added to increase strength, resistance to moisture, fire or decay, or to improve some other property. Fiberboard is not an approved substrate for Nydree flooring.


• What is filler?
  In woodworking, any substance used to fill the holes and irregularities in planed or sanded surfaces to decrease the porosity of the surface before applying finish coatings.


• What is hardwood?
  Generally, one of the botanical groups of deciduous trees that have broad leaves in contrast to the conifers or softwoods. The term has no reference to the actual hardness of the wood.


• What is heartwood?
  The wood that comes from the center of a tree.  It is usually darker than the outside of the tree (sapwood).


• What are manufacturing defects?
  Includes all defects or blemishes that are produced in manufacturing.  Examples include chipped grain, delamination (ply separation), skips in finish, variation in machining, sander burn marks and mis-milling (plank do not fit together on sides or ends).


• What is moisture content?
  The amount of water (moisture) in wood expressed as a percentage of the weight of oven-dried wood.


• What is nosing?
  A profiled molding used to cover the outside comer of a step, milled to meet the flooring in the horizontal plane and to meet the riser in the vertical plane. (Usually used on landings.)


• What is particleboard (chipboard)?
  A panel or core product composed of small particles of wood and wood fiber that are bonded together with synthetic resin adhesives in the presence of heat and pressure. • Flakeboard - A particle panel product composed of wood flakes. • Oriented Strand Board - A type of particle panel product composed of strand-type flakes which are purposefully aligned in directions which make a panel stronger, stiffer, and with improved dimensional properties in the alignment directions than a panel with random flake orientation. • Waferboard - A particle panel product made of wafer-type flakes. Usually manufactured to possess equal properties in all directions parallel to the plane of the panel.  Particleboard of any type is not an approved substrate for Nydree flooring.


• What is plank?
  Typically flooring that is 3" and wider designed to be installed in parallel rows.


• What does prefinished mean?
  A completely finished floor that requires installation only.


• What is sapwood?
  The wood near the outside of the tree. Usually lighter in color than heartwood.


• What is softwood?
  General term used to describe lumber or veneer produced from needle and/or cone bearing trees (Conifers).


• What is tongue and groove?
  Milling around the edge of a flooring plank that allows each plank to join together.  One side of a plank contains a tongue and the other a groove.  The ends of each plank also contain a tongue or groove.


• What is rotary cut veneer?
  Veneer produced by centering the log in a lathe and turning it against a broad cutting knife which is set into the log at a slight angle.


• What is warping?
  Any distortion of a piece of flooring from its true flat plane.

Product FAQs

• Does COR, Bamboo, African Mahogany, Reclaimed or Rustic flooring come in a 2-2/3 inch width?
  No. Currently, COR, Bamboo, African Mahogany, Reclaimed and Rustic flooring are only offered in a 4 inch width.


• Can I get accessories for Bamboo and COR flooring?
  Not at the present time.


• What does Reclaimed mean?
  Nydree's Reclaimed flooring is made from lumber that has been salvaged from a variety of sources such as barns, warehouses, primitive cabins and more.  This lumber can be up to 200 years old and is FSC-Recycled.  We consider our Reclaimed products to be naturally distressed.  They are not manufactured to provide a distressed appearance.  Expect color variation, knots, small knot and nail holes and minor splits.


• What is rift and quartered?
  Almost 100% of the flooring will have straight grain running the length of the plank. Nydree's rift and quartered White Oak is made from sawn lumber.


• Can I glue Nydree flooring directly to underlayment grade plywood?
  Yes, using Nydree UP-28-0VOC adhesive.  However, Nydree flooring should not be glued to particleboard, flakeboard, chipboard, OSB, waferboard, masonite and fibreboard.


• Can I install Nydree flooring over raised concrete?
  Yes, but the concrete must have a compressive strength equal to or greater than 2000 psi.  DO NOT use gypsum-based products.


• Can Nydree flooring come with a square edge?
  Square edge is not available. All Nydree flooring comes with micro-beveled edges and ends.
